D2 - Discuss how the post production edits have complemented recorded cinematography effects to create meaning

In this post, I will evaluate and explain how the editing has complemented the lighting and camerawork choices to creat the cinematic quality.

Roland Barthes' 'Narrative Codes' theory states that media products have a denotation and a connotation and that there are different codes that the narratives conventions can fit into, such as Action codes (actions that give the viewer ideas about what to expect relying on the idea of cause and effect), and Enigma codes (puzzles or problems to be solved by the audience). Even though my music video doesn't necessarily follow any of these narrative codes, I ensured I included denotations and connotations that can be inferred by the spectator. For example, by applying the colourful stylistic effect on the footage, it connotes that R&B music.

The main goal was to make a music video that supports different communities to allow them to feel connected. We did through the use of coloured lighting, high camera quality and colourful transitions and effects in post production. The music video was edited in Premier Pro and we kept the quality as high as possible for clear and crisp footage.

We wanted to show the title on the screen and set the aesthetic of the song before any visuals begin, so we did that by creating a colour fading video and putting masking it into the text. This set the colourful, rainbow aesthetic instantly.

The use of the rainbow in this clip from Beyonce's music video influenced the rainbows and use of colours in my music video as it appears many times throughout the video. When considering Roland Barthes Narrative codes theory, the use of rainbow and colour in this video can be seen as connotation as it is a meaning that can be inferred  by the audience.

The choice to use gold transitions was because they are common within R&B and soul music videos as the colour is typically used to show wealth. We created his effect by using 2-point lighting and adding a 'VR Light Leaks' transition between the clips as it becomes golden and lighter. As previously explored in my P3, the use of warm lighting and colours such as dark reds and oranges.

I took influence from this music video from Beyonce called 'Otherside', as she uses golden, natural colours to create a natural glowing aesthetic. I created my colour artificially using 2-point lighting however Beyonce opted use sunlight.

To create the sliding clips effect, I put the clips in order together and then added push and slide transitions between all of the clips and cropped it to synchronise with the beat.

I decided to add a film dissolve in this scene as it establishes a link to both of the clips. Dissolves are typically used to show passing time, however in this case I used it to show the association between the 2 clips.

For a dramatic effect, we chose to remove all of the colour to show that everyone is equal as the absence of colour can create uniformity and removes any indifferences with skin tones. Black and white can also be used to show a neutral aesthetic that is free from any distractions and biases based with colour. Ultimately, the us of the artistic black and white choice determine how colour and lack of colour can contribute to the idea of equality.
