P4 - Produce a plan to identify the settings required for the recording of cinematic quality footage

Equipment and Prop list

Outfits- we are thinking of going along with a black and gold theme, we will wear heals and gold costumes, we would all wear something slightly different to contrast each other so we all stand out, however in the beginning of the video we are wanting our actors to wear sports clothes like jogging bottoms and leggings to represent them practicing.

Lighting- We want bright studio lights that give us a very lit up effect, but we could also consider led lights that have coloured bulbs so we can create the strobe/rainbow effect instead of plain black and white.

Camera equipment- we will be using a cannon DSLR to film our video, we decided this would be more suitable than our phones as we will have lots of different camera settings to choose from and will have more control of the camera and the settings.

We will be using different camera accessories like dolly’s, sliders, and jibs in our video to create different transitions throughout, we thought this would be appropriate as we are wanting a group of dancers so this equipment will be most effective.

Outline of concept/idea

3 different unique people and their lifestyles shown through expressive movements chiaroscruro/lowkey lighting. Starts all the same, and through each of the versus each character comes out to show their uniqueness through smooth, powerful dance routines, fast cuts to the beat, range of cinematography and shot types such as long shots, establishing shots, close ups and different angles to connote different feelings.

Target Audience

Beyoncé's most frequent listeners are typically women between the age of 20-34. We will aim this music video at a similar target audience of Alien Superstar because it would be successful.

Scheduling and distribution

The music video will be distributed on YouTube, where it will be targeted at an audience of mainly women and homosexual men aged 18-30.

Genre

Our song falls under pop and R&B/Soul, which will mean the audience are probably going to be younger and more on trends, people who are interested in empowerment and uniqueness.

Themes

The song is about empowerment and uniqueness for both women and men. It gives confidence to the viewers and is a pick-me-up.

Settings and locations

We will record this music video in the lecture theatre and sports hall and we will use 3 point lighting to create a studio-like quality. This will mean that lighting is consistent and the various costumes can be worn indoors. The women and men will wear their unique costumes that make them feel like themselves.

Legal and Ethical

BBFC:

BBFC regulate music videos and classifies them with the appropriate age rating. All music videos by artist signed to labels such as Sony Music UK, Universal Music UK, Warner Music UK and all UK independent labels that are unsuitable for children under 12 will be classified with a BBFC age rating and will be displayed next to the video when it is published on YouTube. BBFC examines the videos and classifies them with the appropriate age rating, based on the published BBFC Classification Guidelines, and this is displayed with the video. All music videos given a BBFC age rating can be found on their website.

PRS:

The song choice is classified by PRS, as they pay royalties to artists signed to them as they license their members music by businesses, online in broadcasts and for film, for live performance and as recorded products. These fees cover all kinds of music use, whether its for digital, broadcast or public performance.

ASA:

If there are any adverts that appear in our music video, they are regulated by ASA. The codes on the website are rules that everyone must follow, there are separate codes for broadcast and non-broadcast adverts.

Creative commons and copyright:

Copyright is a law that states that it a set of rights given to the original owner for a fixed amount of years which gives them full rights to to print, publish, perform, film or record; copyright stops other people from using the work of an artist without their permission as if they do this the artist or management could take legal action against them. Throughout the production of my Alien Superstar video, I am taking these rules into consideration by taking my own recordings and editing them, which takes away the risk of copyright infringement as it is then my own work and I can print, publish, film and record any of my own assets when I want. We can use sound effects from Epidemic Sounds; Epidemic Sounds is a creative commons license, which is where the owner allows their intellectual property to be used under certain conditions that must be followed to avoid any legal problems. An example of a creative commons license is non-commercial, which means the owner says the asset cannot be used for commercial use such as publishing to monetise.

I must consider the legal issues and laws put in place. Ethical issues are problems that might offend or annoy a certain group of people.

My music video must not be sexist, contain offensive imagery or content, must not contain any antisemitism, cannot be homophobic and cannot contain any bullying. If my music video show contained anything unethical, this could cause controversy within a community, which could damage my reputation and could stop it from distributing. I could conduct feedback from things such as a survey or questionnaire or a focus group to ensure my audience feel the music video is ethical.
